Twenty women, among many others, contributed each one in her own way, to the recognition of womens rights and in the re-evaluation of the image of women and their role. It resulted in an instructive and enlightening evidence for young generations to realize the importance of the work and actions achieved by these women more than a century ago. Some of these women adopted words as a weapon of defense, women of great values and morale, but also women of the pen like: Julia Tohmé Dimechkié, May Ziadeh, Rose El-Youssef, Salwa Nassar and Nadia Tuéni. Militant women, who fought for the recognition of womens rights and the promulgation of laws for their rights in voting as: Ibtihaj Kaddoura, Ambara Salam Khalidi, Zahia Ayoub, Najla Saab, Laure Moughaizel and Wadad Cortas. In the world of politics, homage goes to: Nazira Joumblatt. In the field of social, humanitarian and cultural activities, spotlights projected on: Alexandra Issa El-Khoury, Annie Sarafian (Ogden Smith), Zalfa Tabet Chamoun and Janine Rubeiz. Women in the world of theatre, cinema and arts, spotlights on: Badia Massabni, Asia Dagher, Asmahan or Al Amira Amalia Fahd Al Atrach and Nour El Houda. An interesting innovating scenography, with three-dimensional full size
panels, representing women in the scene. Women of literature benefited from a poetic presentation with echo of rimes, and their photos displayed in an ancient style with a personal explanatory manuscript. The exhibition (15-28 May) was a brilliant success, and was visited by more than ten thousand students, artists and men of literature. During the first three days 15, 16 and 17 of May, the Foundation organized, in collaboration with the Ministries of Culture, Tourism and Public Works and Transport, visits to several natural, historical sites and museums in Beirut and other regions of Lebanon. For the evening of May 17, 2003, the Foundation invited the children, grandsons and daughters, friends and relatives of the twenty honored women to participate in a guided visit of the exhibition, followed by a dinner at the Maison des Arcades regrouping the invitees around twenty tables carrying the names of Banat Biladi (Women of my Country). This event enabled the Foundation to cover the expenses of the National
Heritage Day for 2004. |
